CoMix Wave Films Brings the Magic of Anime to the Big Screen

CoMix Wave Films Brings the Magic of Anime to the Big Screen – CoMix Wave Films, the powerhouse studio behind beloved hits like “Your Name.” and “Suzume,” has revealed plans to open its very own self-run theatre in the summer of 2026. Get ready for the grand opening of CWF CINEMAS, where the magic of anime will come to life on the big screen.

A Passion Project Reborn

The roots of this exciting venture can be traced back to the closure of a beloved local theatre in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, back in the fall of 2023. For Noritaka Kawaguchi, the CEO of CoMix Wave Films, this was a personal blow, the theatre had hosted many director’s talks for Makoto Shinkai’s films, which held a special place in his heart.

Determined to fill the void and reconnect with the community, Kawaguchi joined forces with local business owner Kenji Nakata to bring CWF CINEMAS to life. This new theatre will serve as a hub for anime and international animation, ensuring that the art form Kawaguchi holds dear continues to thrive and captivate audiences.

A Studio’s Vision Comes to Life

CoMix Wave Films, founded in March 2007 as an offshoot of the company’s merchandising division, has always been a driving force in the anime industry.

Known for their work on Shinkai’s acclaimed films like “The Place Promised in Our Early Days” and “5 Centimeters per Second,” the studio has risen to become the second-most successful anime production company in Japan, trailing only the legendary Studio Ghibli.

A Cinematic Oasis in Saku City

The first CWF CINEMAS location will open in the summer of 2026, nestled in the heart of Saku City, Nagano Prefecture. This strategic location holds deep significance, as it was the home of the beloved theatre that once hosted Shinkai’s director’s talks, a tradition that Kawaguchi is determined to revive and expand upon.

By establishing a permanent presence in the community, CoMix Wave Films aims to create a cinematic oasis where anime enthusiasts can come together, immerse themselves in the art form, and engage with the creators behind the stories they love.

From screenings of local anime productions to international animation showcases, CWF CINEMAS is poised to become a hub of cultural exchange and a testament to the enduring power of the medium.

A Bright Future for Anime Lovers

As the countdown to the summer of 2026 begins, anime fans worldwide are undoubtedly buzzing with anticipation. CoMix Wave Films’ decision to launch its self-run theatre is a bold and exciting move that promises to redefine the way we experience the art of animation. Whether you’re a lifelong devotee or a newcomer to the world of anime, CWF CINEMAS is set to become a must-visit destination.
