Every great anime has a group of legendary characters who made history and are famous all over the world. Big people who make villains and good guys tremble at the base just by hearing their names.
Although the world of One Piece is divided into several countries, kingdoms, races and status, when we talk in terms of strength, we will understand that it is currently divided into 3 great powers: the Yonko, the Navy and the Seraphim, who came to replace the old Shichibukai system. The Yonko are not allies nor are they strictly enemies of one another.
The four Emperors of the Sea are the most notorious and powerful pirate captains in the world, who are strong enough to dominate large territories and make the Navy run from their domains. Because of this, they managed to single-handedly dominate the second half of the New World, exerting impressive influence and control over dozens of other pirate crews and autonomous islands. So, let’s get started.
Whitebeard
Edward Newgate, better known as “Whitebeard”, was the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates and “The Man Closest to One Piece” after Gol D. Roger’s death, and the one who became known as “The Strongest Man in the World”. Before forming his own crew, he was a member of the legendary Rocks Pirates and later in life he became a member of the Yonko who rule the New World.
In his prime, Whitebeard was a rival of Gol D. Roger and, after Roger’s death, was widely recognized as the strongest man in the world. According to Sengoku, Whitebeard had immense power and enough strength to destroy the world. He ate the Gura Gura no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that basically made him an “Earthquake Man”, it was considered the strongest Devil Fruit within the Paramecia class.
With the power of this Devil Fruit, he was able to send incredibly powerful shockwaves through the air, creating cracks in the air itself as if it were made of glass. Whitebeard could use these shockwaves to quickly knock down multiple enemies over a wide area or knock down a specific target by focusing his attack on a single point.
He could also use his shock waves defensively, as his immense raw power could easily block any attack he received. He used his powers to shake, break, and tilt the very landscape of the environment. By attacking the area around him with his fruit’s powers, he could cause massive earthquakes, and under the right circumstances, he would even generate gigantic tsunamis with his power.
Shanks
Shanks the “Red Head” is the head of the Red Hair Pirates and one of the four emperors who rule the New World. He is a former member of the famous Roger Pirates. He was the man responsible for making Luffy want to become a pirate, giving him the Straw Hat as a promise to meet him someday on the high seas. Shanks is known to be one of the four strongest pirates in the world.
Even with only one arm, Shanks can apply tremendous power to his swordsmanship, able to easily match Whitebeard. He has also shown to be extremely fast, having intercepted Akainu before he could kill Coby, surprising all of Marineford with his speed, as before he saved Coby there was no sign of Shanks and his Gang, this is proof of his incredible speed.
Furthermore, on that same occasion, Shanks was also shown to be powerful enough to easily defend against Akainu’s magma fist using only his sword and Armament Haki. In fact, Shanks is one of the few people in the world who can use all three types of Haki. Even Whitebeard praised Shanks for his Haki when he used it on his visit, with Jozu stating that it was overwhelming.
Shanks possessed enough power to end the war in Marineford with just words… when he stated that they shouldn’t fight anymore, no one stepped forward to challenge him, even though the Marines were in high spirits after the deaths of Ace and Whitebeard. Not even Blackbeard wanted to clash with him, and decided to run away.
Blackbeard
Marshall D. Teach, also known as Blackbeard, is the admiral of the Blackbeard Pirates and was the pirate who took Whitebeard’s place as the Yonko. He began his pirate career as a member of the 2nd Division of the Whitebeard Pirates, until he assassinated the 4th Division Commander to obtain the Yami Yami no Mi, and subsequently defected from the crew.
Through unknown methods, he stole the extremely destructive powers of the Gura Gura no Mi from Whitebeard’s corpse, and became able to create earthquakes like his old captain. Blackbeard ate the Yami Yami no Mi, a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to create, control and transform his body into darkness, which is similar to black smoke, and has a strong gravitational pull.
Teach demonstrates that the “darkness” is a void that devours anything, capable of pulling and crushing the surrounding environment into a pile of rubble, much like a real black hole. Due to the Yami Yami no Mi’s gravitational ability, Blackbeard, unlike any other Logia user, is not intangible, drawing attacks more quickly to himself, meaning he will take more damage than an ordinary human.
However, Blackbeard claims that the risk this poses is well worth the advantages of the fruit he possesses. With the power of darkness granted by the Yami Yami no Mi, which “reduces everything to nothing”, and the power of earthquakes granted by the Gura Gura no Mi, which “brings destruction to all”, Blackbeard claims to be truly invincible and the strongest of all.
Big Mom
Charlotte Linlin, better known as Big Mom, is the captain of the Big Mom Pirates and a former Yonko. She was also a part of the Rocks Pirates crew as one of its core members. Big Mom is the matriarch of the great Charlotte Family, where her many children make up the backbone of her crew. After being defeated by Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law in Wano, Big Mom was stripped of her position as a Yonko.
Big Mom acquired the powers of the Soru Soru no Mi after the death of her former user, Carmel. This is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows Big Mom to manifest people’s souls into an ethereal substance, which substance she can grab and extract from the victim, essentially stealing their soul. With that, she can basically take a person’s lifespan away in an amount of time of her choosing.
She also used parts of her own Soul to create three of her most powerful companions: Zeus, who is a storm cloud that she summons with her left hand; Prometheus, who is a sun that she invokes with her right hand; and the Napoleon, which is a bicorn hat that she wears on her head. Zeus and Prometheus allow Big Mom to unleash extremely powerful flames and lightning.
Napoleon, on the other hand, can transform into a sword that can be used by Big Mom or attack on its own… in addition to telepathically receiving information from other homies and relaying it to Big Mom. Later, Big Mom ended up replacing Zeus with a new special Homie from Cloud named Hera, who proved to be even stronger than Zeus.
Kaidou
Beasts Pirates Kaidou, known as the “Strongest Creature” in the world, is the Governor-General of the Beasts Pirates and was formerly one of the four emperors who rule the New World. Decades ago, before the formation of his own crew, Kaidou was also part of the Rock Pirates. For a long time, he and his crew occupied Wano Country in alliance with the shogun Orochi.
The fame of his strength is so great that everyone says that, in a one-on-one battle, Kaidou would win without the slightest doubt. Added to this was also the rumor that he was incapable of dying, as he had survived death sentences and executions of various kinds, having even tried to kill himself by jumping off an island in the sky. …That was until Luffy changed everything, right? Lol….
Kaidou ate the Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows him to transform into a huge blue oriental dragon or even into a human-dragon hybrid form. His full Dragon form is massive, roughly half the size of a small city, and is covered in extremely durable blue scales, drastically increasing Kaidou’s natural body’s tremendous natural durability.
His hybrid form grants him a drastic increase in his speed, agility and mobility, while maintaining, or even increasing, his already incredible resilience and physical strength. Kaidou has mastered his Devil Fruit powers to the level that he can access some of their draconic abilities without even needing to transform.
Buggy
Buggy is a former member of the Roger Pirates and a former member of the Shichibukai, as well as being one of Luffy’s first enemies in One Piece and a former companion of Shanks. He has been a recurring character in One Piece, having appeared in several arcs. After the downfall of Kaidou and Big Mom, he was recognized as one of the 4 Emperors who rule the New World.
Buggy accidentally ate the Bara Bara no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to split his body into multiple pieces and reassemble them at will, making him immune to slashing attacks. Because he is invulnerable to slashing attacks, he can be considered the natural enemy of even the strongest swordsman, as seen when he easily survived Mihawk’s powerful slashing skill.
He can launch his body parts at high speed, which allows him to hit a distant target with enough force to send a man flying through the air. He can also split his body to deflect opponents’ attacks, separating the section of his body that would have received the attack and sending it flying out of the way. Furthermore, his body parts remain connected to each other even when separated.
For example, if his hand is loose, he can still control his fingers normally. Furthermore, he can feel any pain that is inflicted on his loose parts. Buggy also uses knives to fight, using his power to detach parts of his body to increase the range of his blows. He usually holds one knife at a time or even 3 knives between the fingers of his hands.
Monkey D. Luffy
Monkey D. Luffy, also known as “Straw Hat”, is the main protagonist of One Piece and the captain of the increasingly infamous and powerful Straw Hat Pirates. After he and his teammates defeated Kaidou and Big Mom, Luffy became one of the four emperors who rule the New World. His lifelong dream is to become the king of Pirates by finding the legendary treasure left behind by the late Gol D. Roger.
Luffy ate a Zoan Mythic-type Devil Fruit, the Hito Hito no Mi: Model Nika, which allows him to transform into an incarnation of the legendary “Sun God” Nika and gain his powers. For a long time, everyone believed that Luffy had eaten the Gomu Gomu no Mi, the Rubber Fruit, an error that was being confirmed by the World Government as a way to hide the mythical fruit from Luffy.
Luffy’s Devil Fruit gives his body a physiology of rubber, which allows him to stretch his limbs to incredible distances, using this characteristic to attack his enemies. In addition to withstanding great impacts, it can fall from high altitudes without being injured. During his piracy adventure, Luffy found new ways to utilize his Devil Fruit in combat, creating techniques he called Gears.
